Battery technology has advanced to the point that legacy battery electric vehicle (BEV) test procedures are outdated. Using the original procedures for testing the range of today's BEVs would take as long as two back-to-back 8-hour shifts. New procedures are being developed to find much shorter test methods without compromising the accuracy of the results. There are many options available that have been investigated using BEV test vehicles. Finding vehicle range without testing numerous cycles to the actual end of vehicle range requires extrapolation techniques based upon much shorter tests. Different test options have different calculation options. The shortest option allows total test time to be very similar to that of a conventional (i.e., internal combustion engine) vehicle. All short test options presented gave similar efficiency results and adequate predictions of range. Several effects were observed that showed deviations in short test results compared to a full-range test. They are: thermal warm-up, high state of charge regeneration differences, and high-power active thermal management.
