The mainly focus of this paper is to present a calculation method for engine power of hybrid powered excavator. Firstly, a driveline layout with super capacitor is proposed, which is used in a parallel hybrid excavator. Then the work implements of excavator are analyzed, applying the Newton-Euler Equation, to estimate the power demanded. Finally, the calculation for 20-ton class excavator is showed. According to the results, it can be concluded that soil type and operation time are key factors which determine the engine power in hybrid system.
