The performances of electrical energy storage systems made by lithium-ion batteries, which are considered as one of the most promising candidates for use in electric and hybrid vehicles, need to be carefully measured and related to the various mobile applications. The attention on lithium (Li) batteries is mainly motivated by the peculiar technical properties and features particularly suitable for the applications in which high energy and power are required in small volumes and weight. The demand to reach high voltages involves the use of big battery packs made by long strings of cells, series and/or parallel connected. These large Li batteries must be then carefully controlled to be safely and economically used for a long time, in order to avoid any negative impact on the effective and economical applications in commercial electrically-propelled vehicles. Currently, there is limited knowledge on the real life and performances of these Li batteries, normally equipped with a control and management system (BMS), in order to assemble a complete battery system to be installed onboard, aimed at optimizing the performances in any operating condition. There are large efforts worldwide to better understand and, somehow, experimentally verify the battery life and operational limits, not only of the single cells, but mainly of the complete systems and the related electronics and thermal management systems. Due to these reasons, the ENEA's Low Environmental Impact Vehicles. Laboratory has started experimental testing activities on battery packs and systems in order to investigate major technical limitations, which are expected to be significantly different from the test results on single cells. This paper is aimed at describing and reporting on chief results of the experimental investigations on different chemistries and assemblies with focus on the most recent one, which clearly demonstrate the required efforts to further improve the control and management needs of the technologies on the market.
