This paper presents operation strategies for a range extender electric vehicle (EREV), which is a solution to overcome battery's low energy density limitation. Based on the European legislation and a real world long distance trip, simulation analyses have been done to determine which strategy is the most acceptable strategy for an EREV. In the paper three strategies are analyzed. By comparing CO2 emissions, cost, NVH and driving range, the optimized operation strategy will not only focus on improving the fuel consumption but also on improving the customer usability.
