Modern control techniques for semi-active suspension systems are compared in this paper in a new generalized framework regarding the experimental validation and the performance evaluation. Especially the performance of a hybrid model predictive controller is analyzed and it is shown that it is resembled by a clipped optimal controller even if a realistic nonlinear damper characteristic is considered. In order to take the dissipative nature of the semi-active damper into account the clipped optimal controller design is furthermore extended by a dissipativity constraint for the damper force. The control concepts are compared with skyhook based techniques using a quarter-vehicle test rig for the experimental validation. Thereby it is shown that in the realistic experimental setup, model based control approaches offer a performance improvement over conventional skyhook algorithms.
