1.4310 (C1000) is the austenitic stainless steel grade which is pushed by ArcelorMittal Stainless Europe to get into the automotive body-in-white market. This austenitic grade is an unstable one (17.2%Cr, 7.2%Ni), delivered in temper rolled condition (C1000) in order to reach a UTS of ~1000MPa while keeping an elongation of 26%. This study first presents the complete characterizations (tensile, crash, bending, and stamping tests) of this grade in comparison with DP600, which is today the best-in class steel grade solution for cold stamped A-pillars in the automotive body-in-in white. A focus is also done about delayed cracking, showing that with traditional industrial stamping conditions, this stainless steel grade is not sensitive to this phenomenon. Secondly, in the frame of the 'S-in motion' ArcelorMittal project, the feasibility study as well as final prototypes of an automotive A-pillar in 1.1mm-thick 1.4310 (C1000) are presented. With regards to the 1.4mm-thick DP600 solution, a lightweight of 24% is then achieved.
