Tests on the influence of disability glare in automotive lighting have been in most cases carried out in a static environment. During recent studies at Technische Universität Darmstadt (TUD) it was revealed that the findings of static tests do not necessarily comply with the widely used formulas published by CIE. As the tests were also static the question was raised what influence a driving task would have on the subjects contrast sensitivity. A dynamic test setup was created and driving tests were conducted on the Griesheim airfield [1]. The drivers were given the task to locate a rectangular viewing target which was projected into their view on the windscreen by a head up display. They were then driving down the straight runway at 80 km-h-1 towards an oncoming car. The driving distance was approx. 820 m and the subjects had to detect the target at least every 2.5 s. The drives were repeated at various contrast levels and with the oncoming car having high beam and low beam on. The results show that tolerable visual impairment is not exceeded if high beam functions are switched off at a distance of 415 m, when using high beam assist systems. In the case of adaptive high beam light patterns, stray light to the drivers' eyes shall be reduced to levels which occur at low beam usage in 50 m distance.
