In the present study, a novel test apparatus, namely the windscreen wiper-on-cylinder machine has been analysed. This machine enables the tribological behaviour of standard and prototype windscreen wipers to be investigated not only at specimen level, as in case of former studies, but also at structural level. Furthermore, it makes possible to study both the full contact and partial contact states. In the latter case, the wiper blade is not in contact with the glass counter surface along its total length. It was found that experimental results are strongly affected by the eccentricity and the real, noncircular cross-section of the glass cylinder. One of the main contributions of this article is the development of a mathematical model for explaining qualitatively the experimental results. A good agreement was found between the theoretical model and the measurement. In presence of water experiments showed that the coefficient of friction decreases as the normal force as well as the sliding speed increases. In case of sliding rubber components operating under mixed lubrication majority of normal load is carried by solid-solid contact. As a last step, authors made an attempt to compare the predictive capability of two different contact theories (Greenwood-Williamson contact law and Persson's contact theory) frequently used in recent mixed friction models. It was found that the difference in static film thickness (separation) can reach about four orders of magnitude at a contact pressure of p = 1 MPa.
