The application of waste heat recovery systems to commercial vehicles is seen as potential step to help such vehicles achieve likely future fuel consumption legislation. Whilst these systems are showing promising results on engine test beds, simulation tools are needed to support their development. Due to the complex system interactions, there is a necessity to simulate the system together with the complete vehicle infrastructure in particular with the cooling system as the Rankine Cycle's heat sink, in order to predict the actual likely fuel consumption benefit. Behr, as a potential supplier of many of the components of a WHR system, and with its experience in cooling system development, has applied its own simulation tools to this issue. The Behr Integrated System Simulation (BISS) software, designed to simulate vehicle thermal management systems has been expanded to include Rankine Cycle systems and their components. The heat exchanger models have been validated by component testing. System simulations now give helpful indications about the impact of the working fluid choice, the Rankine system architecture, the cooling system layout and the engine emission strategy on the fuel economy benefit.
