This paper describes the performance validation of the hybrid control unit (HCU) which manages the energy and distributes the torque and power of 4x4 military vehicles by HILS. The HIL system which is configured in this research consists of the driver simulator, HIL simulator, and controller. The driver simulator offers the human interfaces such as the acceleration pedal, brake pedal, steering wheel. The plant model including the vehicle dynamics model and hybrid propulsion system model is run in the HIL simulator. HCU control algorithm is implemented in the controller. The vehicle this research is targeting on is a series hybrid electric vehicle with front and rear driving motors that are connected to the reduction gears. The power is transmitted to the reduction gears, differentials, hub reduction gears, and wheels sequentially. The engine rotates the generator, charges the batteries and the ultra-capacitors, and supplies electricity to the motors. Two kinds of HCU control algorithms are compared. Thermostat algorithm which controls the engine at the most efficient point and the modified power-follower algorithm which varies the engine power along with the driver demand and controls the ultra-capacitor SOC actively are compared.
