All systems in modern vehicles rely on software: safety-critical control systems of the car, engine-management, and comfort-functions like entertainment. The automotive ECUs that run this software are becoming more complex. As a consequence, they need to integrate a large amount of software on a single hardware unit. The software to be integrated can span several functional domains in the vehicle. Every domain needs to satisfy different safety requirements. The integration of functions with different safety requirements using microkernel technology is part of the Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) architecture, which has been devised for avionics about a decade ago. This work evaluates the benefits of reusing common IMA building blocks, such as a separation microkernel, for ISO 26262 developments. As an example, the microkernel based COQOS operating system by OpenSynergy will be used. COQOS integrates the DO-178B certified microkernel PikeOS by SYSGO.
