In this work, it was attempted draw relationships between traditional open-loop handling metrics and some quadratic closed-loop performance parameters. To this end, a vehicle model was built for a small passenger car and was validated with track test data. In addition, a driver model that includes lead, lag, time delay, and preview distance considerations was built. Quadratic cost functions were then adapted to take-into account lane-change tracking performance and driver mental and physical workload. Driver model parameters were then selected to satisfy optimised double lane change performance for the various vehicle configurations considered. These driver parameters were then used for the subsequent analyses of relationships between open-loop and closed-loop performance metrics. The qualitative analysis of open-loop four-parameter handling performance metrics and double lane change (closed-loop) quadratic metrics generated for various configurations of the vehicle indicated the following clear relationships: (1) as steady state yaw rate gain and yaw rate bandwidth increased path-following ability (J1) is generally enhanced, (2) as yaw rate bandwidth increases and lateral acceleration phase lag at 1 Hz decreases both physical (J2) and mental (J3) workload on the driver are reduced. Relationships between the other performance metrics are found to be less definitive with the approach taken in the present work and the vehicle (and its configurations) considered. It was also noted that even for the specific relationships identified, the extent of the correlation could be a function of the vehicle design characteristics that were changed to extract the relationships.
