The unsteady flow field around the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), a reflecting telescope carried inside an open port of a Boeing 747SP, has been simulated by means of Detached Eddy Simulations (DES) with the CFD-solver TAU of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in order to predict the unsteady flow-induced loads. A porous fence has been placed upstream of the cavity and simulated with DES to investigate its impact on the unsteady pressure fluctuations on the surface of the telescope assembly. The analysis shows that the deflection of the shear layer and the alteration of its stability characteristics reduce the unsteady telescope loads significantly, due to lowered overall pressure amplitudes and due to the shift of acoustic energy to lower frequencies.
