With the expansion of optical communications services, it has become common to install two or more cables together in conduits, to make effective use of limited conduit space. Approximately 3,000 km of these multiple cables are installed every year. However, preliminary inspections of conduits that are intended for such multiple cable installations have shown that more than half of them are defective (mostly due to rust and corrosion). Excavation-less inspection and renovation technologies for empty conduits have already been developed and implemented. But up until now, there have been no excavation-less techniques for renovating conduits that contain cables, due to the risk of damage to the cables within the conduits. We have therefore developed a 'cable-accommodating conduit renovation technique' which enables the repair of defective cable-accommodating conduits but does not involve excavation and does not affect the cables, and which also enables the maximum accommodation capacity after the renovation. In this article, we will give an outline of lining materials and report on renovation methods. We use a thermoplastic resin member (mainly of vinyl chloride) which has space for the existing cable and an additional two spaces for the installation of optical cables. This member consists of a main part and a joint part. Clearances at the joint parts enable use in curved conduit sections. Since the components are prefabricated in factories, their quality is more stable than it would be if fabricated on-site. A short length of lining member that has space for accommodating the existing cable is wrapped around the cable and fitted together within the manhole. The next lining member is connected to the end of the previous member and is inserted into the conduit. This work is done within the manhole, so various devices such as a thruster that inserts the lining member into the conduit have been considered, to enable work within a limited space.
