The importance of titanium alloys as a resource material in modern leading industry branches such as aerospace is rapidly growing. Nowadays, the material is commonly used to manufacture components such as turbine discs. However, in-service failures may lead to a catastrophe and result in significant financial failure or even in life loss. Nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques that are used in case of traditional aerospace materials are not always sufficient to detect defects created in titanium alloys during a production process. Therefore, occurs need of introducing a new NDT measuring system that allows detection of outer flaws in thick titanium structures. The newly developed ECT system for observation of minor defects in titanium alloy was presented. The system uses the lock-in technique which allows to detect signals having the amplitude lower than the noise level and in consequence to increase the possible depth penetration. The results of verifying experiments with titanium alloy plates and billets having artificial notches confirm the possibility of using this system in industrial applications.
