This paper presents a model for reducing the brake squeal by utilising a harmonic force. It is found that self excited, unstable vibration of brake system which follows Stribeck friction law can be stabilised by applying a dither force on the system. This idea is more effective when the dither force is parallel to the brake force than when the dither force is perpendicular to it. The friction coefficient does not have any effect on the latter case. The results indicate that a sliding mode controller can be utilised to decrease the influence of self excited vibration on the brake squeal phenomenon. By applying the sliding mode controller, the created noise has low amplitude and frequency out of the human hearing range. However, the average load applied by the controller to the system is negative and this, in turn, slightly reduces the performance of the brake system. As the brake squeal usually happens in low speeds, this amount is acceptable and can be used in real cases. The use of torque method controller was also investigated and it was shown that this controller also can reduce the noise level by reducing the vibration amplitude and placing the frequency of the system response out of human hearing range. The percent of reduction in the brake performance for this controller is slightly higher than the sliding mode controller.
