For characterizing the variation of local deformation properties associated with the different weld zones in the FSW-butt joint of high strength aluminium, local stress-strain curves were determined from spherical indents on a cross-section of the joint. The mapping of force-depth curves to stress-strain curves was carried using a neural network based analysis software. A slotted indentation test specimen has been introduced, which allows the relaxation of potential residual stress before indentation testing. In this way, systematic error in the neural network application can be avoided. The stress-strain curves derived from indentation tests have been compared with that obtained from micro-tensile tests. It turned out that at strains smaller than 2% the stress-strain curves of indentation tests underestimate that of micro-tensile tests by about 15%, whereas very good agreement is seen at larger strains. Most importantly, the investigation demonstrates that spherical indentation tests combined with neural network application is valid to quantify local deformation property variations in FSW-butt joints. The results are comparable to much more expensive and time consuming experiments on micro-tensile specimens.
