Promoting the effect of a number of soil electrolyte components, namely, bicarbonate, sulfide, and phosphate, on the corrosion crack growth in X70 pipeline steel in a citrate buffer solution with pH 5.5 is related to the acceleration of active iron dissolution in the presence of these substances. Soil electrolyte composition, e.g., nitrite anions, do not affect the anodic reaction kinetics in the given corrosion medium, and do not alter the rate of crack growth in pipeline steel. Inhibitors of anodic corrosion significantly enhance the stability of pipeline steel against corrosion cracking. The effect of promoters of metal HD on the SCC process in pipeline steel is apparently determined by the regularities of the influence of adsorbed hydrogen on the anodic reaction. In weakly acidic (pH 5.5) electrolytes, HD promoters of metal HD produce no activating effect on corrosion cracking of pipeline steel. An exception may consist of media in which the steel corrosion potential is shifted to the range of potentials of prepassive or passive metal state. Under these conditions, hydrogen absorbed by the metal accelerates active ion dissolution and results in a negative shift in the pitting formation potential. In electrolytes with neutral pH, absorbed hydrogen increases the rate of iron dissolution in a wide range of potentials, so that a stimulating effect of metal HD promoters on the pipeline steel SCC process must be expected in these media.
