In order to cope with increasing oil prices and upcoming CO2 regulations, truck and car manufacturers are looking for vehicle efficiency improvements. As most of them are powered today by internal combustion engines, they have fuel-to-shaft efficiency of 20 to 40%, which means that a huge part of the fuel energy is dissipated as heat. With recent improvements in thermoelectric materials, we are getting closer to the break-event point, where this technology could be profitable at automotive scale. RENOTER (acronym for waste heat recovery in engine exhaust trough thermoelectricity) is a French funded project which started in late 2008, including 8 partners of universities, suppliers and manufacturers. The goal is to build real prototypes with a realistic integration level, targeting 100 to 300W for a conventional diesel passenger car (2 liter diesel engine - 150hp) and up to 1-3kW for a heavy-duty truck (11 liter diesel engine - 460hp). The choice and optimization of thermoelectric materials was made in order to reach a convenient production cost (0.2 to 1/W). A particular care has been given to the thermoelectric heat exchanger architecture in order to be as close as possible to the state-of-art manufacturing processes. An exhaustive simulation work has also been performed in order to pre-dimension the complete set-up, and was validated by submodules tests.
