Since the late 90s various whiplash prevention concepts have been introduced on the market. The objective was to study the effectiveness of whiplash protection concepts based on real-world injury outcome. In the study the influence on whiplash symptoms lasting longer than one month was studied. Cars fitted with any kind of whiplash protection concept had approximately 30 % lower risk (13.2 +/- 0.9 compared to 9.2 +/- 1.2) of a whiplash symptoms lasting longer than one month compared with standard seats launched after 1997. Passive seats (Toyota WIL and Audi from 2008), RHR in Audi, Opel, Saab, Seat, Skoda and VW, Volvo WHIPS and Toyota WIL, all showed lower risk of whiplash symptoms lasting longer than one month compared to cars with standard seats. Most car makes showed reductions in their seats with various whiplash concepts. As has been shown in previous studies Volvo Whips, Saab SAHR and Toyota WIL all show good reductions, in this study between 35 % and 60 %. Also Opel seats with RHR lower the risk significantly (36 %). However, the largest reduction was seen for Audi seats with RHR (more than 80 %), although the number of observations was low.
