Carbon composites are more and more used in structural design of modern aircrafts. Especially for high-lift applications heavily loaded structures such as composite loops or single pin lugs are needed for load introduction. In order to develop simple design guidelines for those thick composite structures, a numerical approach including progressive failure is presented. Here Pucks 3D action plane failure criteria and degradation scheme are used for the material modeling of composite lugs and loops. Within the implementation of these physically based failure criteria, user subroutines are linked to the non-linear analysis with Abaqus/Standard. Validation of the numerical analysis is achieved using static tests of generic specimens of thick composite single pin lugs. Reaching a good agreement between numerical and experimental results a sensitivity analysis regarding different design parameters of composite load introduction structures is carried out delivering reliable design guidelines.
