The sound of a car has become an important kind of a brand label. It must be deliberately designed and well-tuned to the expectations of the target group. To determine and create the target sound the use of innovative tools and advanced acoustical analyses is required already at early stages of development. Since modern vehicles become more and more quiet, the customers sensitiveness for the acoustical comfort even increases. However, simple acoustical indicators like sound pressure levels are completely insufficient to achieve high acoustic comfort. Thus, the optimization of interior noise must be realized considering functional, psycho-acoustic and psychological factors at the same time. In order to perform the task adequately, psychoacoustics must be applied and combined tools and methods developed. The challenge of reliably determining the sound quality of vehicle sounds can only be performed with, on the one hand, the application of psychoacoustics and on the other hand with the permanent pursuit of deriving further hearing related parameters, which match specific human sensations, such as the Relative Approach. However, it must be mentioned that the consideration of physical values alone is not sufficient to determine sound quality. Sound quality studies and target sound development require multi-dimensional approaches integrating new and inter-disciplinary methods and procedures, where then human subject - the customer - with the expectations, emotions and attitude in the context of the specific product is taken into account.
