In this study, an Hinfinite/GH2 design scheme was proposed for preview suspensions. The main motivation for employing the multi-objective preview control of this study for active vehicle suspensions was the improvement of system performance for all road types as well as constraining suspension working space, not minimising it. The simulation results for different road profiles showed the superiority of multi-objective preview controller to LQG preview controller in this sense. However, some other benefits of the multi-objective preview design to LQG preview are given below. LMI formulation of the problem allows for considering pole location constraints to guarantee sufficient stability margins for the system. The design is done in one step and it requires no observer design. In LQG preview design, adding the observer, which itself should be obtained through trials, may also call for redesign of the controller. The proposed multi-objective design approach reduces the number of a posteriori analyses to check for fulfilment of constraints or even eliminates the need for them. All we need is to normalise the exogenous inputs and controlled outputs. It may require just few trials before the desired performance is obtained. The LQG design, where achievement of system constraints is proved by a posteriori analysis of the closed-loop system, requires many trials to obtain a satisfactory design. This design is slightly robuster than LQ-based one. The simulation results showed the robustness against parameter changes. Dynamic weighting functions can be easily considered in the design procedure to emphasise on certain frequency range in performance outputs. We believe that the presented results point out the efficiency of the proposed scheme and it seems that Hinfinite/GH2 preview is a convenient approach for preview suspension design. This study considered a look-ahead preview scheme. Look-ahead preview suffers the drawback of wrong interpretation of pseudo-obstacles, whereas the wheelbase preview is more promising. Application of the strategy described in this paper to the half car model with wheelbase preview will be some part of the author's future work.
