The study presented in the paper shows how an adaptive control system can use the available information on the track characteristics of a given train route and on the hydraulic fluid temperature to modulate the supply pressure of a hydraulic system providing the power necessary to perform the tilting operation with maximum efficiency and minimum energy consumption. The energy saving depends on the severity of the route and the external atmospheric conditions; it is maximum for routes with smooth curves requiring low tilt angles and with high temperatures. Two specific cases were analysed, a medium and a severe route, and, considering an external temperature of 0 C, energy savings from 34,4 to 54,5 % were obtained. Even greater savings can of course be obtained when the train travels along a softer route.
