In the present study, a flow rate measurement method using an AE (Acoustic Emission) sensor was proposed in order to realize a non-contact indirect measurement method. The characteristics of the proposed measurement system were experimentally clarified. The experimental results indicated that steady flow rates could be measured with a repeatability of within 7 % over the region in which the flow rate ranges from 4 l/m into 11 l/min. For the case of an unsteady flow rate, the frequency response of the AE type flow rate sensor agreed well with the frequency response of the flowmeter used for calibration at frequencies of from 0.1 Hz to 0.4 Hz. However, the accuracy of the flow rate measurement using the proposed system decreased considerably for an unsteady flow as compared to a steady flow.
