A space suit is itself a wondrous application of functional high technology fibres. It contains a water circulated underwear which has a three layer structure, of thin PVC tubes built into the middle layer and outer covering of elastic nylon spandex and the airtight garment made up of three layers of nylon sheet net interlaced with neoprene-coated (synthetic rubber) nylon nets. The radiations protecting cloth is made of two layers of Kapton film of heat resistant polyamide resin and glass fibres sheet to insulate against heat and protect against micrometeorites. With increasing demand for automobiles in the global market, and a simultaneous pressure to address the issue of sustainability, there is continuing need for the incorporation of natural fibre based materials into automotives. The focus of recent research has been to produce compostable cotton fibre based composites that can be safely disposed off after their intended use without polluting the atmosphere, in an environmentally safe manner. It is evident from studies being done jointly at the University of Tennessee, University of Bremen, Germany and USDA, New Orleans that, by suitably combining cotton and other natural cellulosic fibres, with an appropriate biodegradable binder fibre in the right combination a moldable nonwoven fabric can be produced. Results from these studies addressing the structure and properties of the composites, with respect to their suitability for automotive applications are discussed. With the blurring gap between product and service, automobile manufacturers will always be under pressure to delight the customers. This will definitely fuel future innovations in automotive textiles the combination of new materials and processing techniques will positively influence important properties such as luxury, weight, acoustics and environmental protection.
