To guarantee the reliability of trucks while trying to optimise cost, weight, or fuel consumption, a thorough understanding of the strength of a component and the load it is exposed to is needed to derive suitable loads for durability testing. Optimising cost or weight tends to reduce the strength of components and is thus restricted by safety demands. Reliability is often denned as the absence of failures or as a low failure probability under a defined loading. As the scatter of the customer loads is very high due to the different service conditions, the load used for testing needs to be carefully related to the customer distribution. A three step procedure is proposed. a) A suitable customer usage model taking into account all important factors like payload or road type is constructed and design loads representing e.g. a 90%-customer are estimated, b) Strength requirements are derived based on a combination of statistical reasoning and empirical safety factors which take into account the uncertainty in load and strength as well as high reliability demands, c) The strength requirements are mapped onto the loads induced by proving ground lanes and manoeuvres by means of multicriteria optimisation.
