Development approval and operation of safety-related systems are regulated by standards. Compliance to these safety standards is often required to comply with law. There are several domain-specific safety standards for different industrial domains. Notable are the generic safety standard IEC 61508, on which several of the domain-specific safety standards are based, and the aviation safety standards DO-178B, DO- 254, ARP 4754, and ARP 4761 because of their long tradition. Also worth mentioning are the well established railway safety standards EN 50126, EN 50128, and EN 50129, while the automotive safety standard ISO/DIS 26262 is still being introduced. Common approaches of all safety standards are the concepts of risk analysis on system level identifying possible hazards and analyzing the effects, hazard control based on safety targets and safety integrity levels, and safety management within a safety life cycle. Within this common frame, the different domain-specific standards consider and emphasize different aspects, e.g. approval by an authority, and require specific measures to meet the safety goals. There are several methods available for analyzing different issues within risk analysis and hazard control such as Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP), Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). Development of safety-related systems is characterized by the compliance to the procedures and methods prescribed by the safety standards depending on the safety integrity level. Important aspects are, among others, a systematic approach, documentation, traceability against the requirements, and compliance to regulations (e.g. coding rules).
