To meet the pass-by regulation is compulsory for automotive marketing. This paper addressed noise source diagnosis for the all-terrain vehicle under development which exceeded the pass-by noise target by 3-5 dB. Three primary noise sources investigated were intake system, exhaust system, and engine/transmission. We performed noise ranking measurements in an acoustic chamber with an engine dynamometera controlled environment provided consistent test results. By establishing the noise correlation between pass-by and engine dynamometer results, we identified the noise contribution and desirable noise reduction of individual system. The concerned orders and frequencies were highlighted and discussed for design refinement. The ranking results showed that the exhaust noise contributed 57.9%, following with 27.2% contribution from intake noise under low-speed gear operation; the exhaust noise contributed 86.4%, following with 12.5% noise contribution from engine/transmission under high-speed gear operation. The ranking results concluded the effort of engine/transmission noise refinement to improve pass-by was ineffective and worthless. To meet the target of below 80 dB for lowspeed gear operation, the noise control strategy was simultaneous reduction of the exhaust tailpipe noise by 11 dB and the intake noise by 3 dB. The target can be achieved by reducing the exhaust tailpipe noise by 5.5 dB for high-speed gear operation. The systematic ranking and correlation method used in this study provided an effective approach for achieving pass-by target.
