Since the sound from engine and an exhaust system hardly occurs for the electric vehicle and hybrid car which are spreading and progressing recently, it is difficult for the pedestrian nearby to recognize the existence of the vehicles. As one of the methods to prevent this type of recognition related problem, installation of the equipment on the vehicle which would let people know of the existence and approaching of the vehicle by artificial sound is in consideration, but further consideration will be needed not to make this equipment a new noise source. In this study, the 'loudness' for various sounds (henceforth, warning sound) to let people know of the approaching vehicle was researched. As a result, among the kind of sample sound it turned out that the acceptability for the chime and the melodic sound is high whereas it is low for the engine and the monotonous sound. The acceptability under the driving condition was higher than that under the stationary condition. This may be related to the fact that the participants were exposed to virtually the constant sound pressure level for one minute under the stationary condition while the sound pressure level changed over time under the driving condition, and to the fact that the vehicle approached and passed in a short period time under the running condition.
