Underground storage of petrochemicals and liquefied petroleum products in geological salt formations is significant to the operations of NOVA Chemical's Corunna plant site. The site currently operates six caverns, representing about 10% of existing Ontario cavern capacity. Five of the site's caverns were solution mined during the 1970's. During the mid-1980s, a sixth cavern was washed, and two existing caverns were modified by the installation of dual entry wellbores. Historical and logistical information relative to Ontario's cavern storage industry is presented. The primary emphasis of the document is a review of NOVA's cavern operating experiences during the first 35 years of cavern operations. The contribution that caverns provide in the areas of safety and capital costs will be reviewed.
