The Optimised CVT Hybrid is a parallel hybrid driveline for passenger Cars. Its core element is a novel two-range CVT with a large overall ratio spread. Shifting between the low-speed and high-speed range is accomplished without interruption of traction using two synchronised clutches in combination with coordinated control of the CVT. The IC engine can be started when the vehicle is in motion using a new method. The electric motor is temporarily used as a flywheel by quickly decreasing the CVT ratio. The torque induced by this deceleration of the electric motor is transferred to the IC engine through a wet multi-disc clutch. This allows for a jerk-free engine start with continuous acceleration of the vehicle. Both the powershift and the dynamic engine start have been demonstrated at a test rig and with an experimental vehicle with high reliability and subjectively good comfort, although there is still potential for further optimisation of the engine start, e.g. through closed-loop control. Another focus of future work will be an objective evaluation of shifting and starting comfort. Experimental analysis of fuel economy shows savings of up to 29 % in the ECE cycle compared to the corresponding series-production vehicle with a manual transmission. This is in agreement with previous Simulation results and shows that fuel economy and drivability do not exclude each other. A detailed analysis of energy flow inside the electrical and mechanical parts of the driveline discloses where losses occur. These findings can contribute to improvement of future hybrid powertrains.
