The backward light signals of motor vehicles are submitting relevant information of the drivers behavior to the following traffic. The perceptibility of the discrete light functions of rear lamps is variably influenced by different environmental impact. To define the ideal perceptibility of signal lights the luminous intensities have to be considered in conjunction with the adaptation luminance and bearings like the superposition of sunlight as well as driving conditions. According to actual ECE regulations, rear direction indicators as well as stop, tail and fog lamps can be designed with variable luminance levels dependent on ambient light. This regulation permits a luminance intensity range for each signal and prescribes variable transitions, but lacks of specifications about the interconnection of the signal lights and the influencing parameter. The results of the conducted laboratory and static field tests prove the need of adaptive light signalling devices capable to match the varying demands on signal luminance as perceptional circumstances change. Based on the presented findings, the ambiguity about how the variation of light signalling devices should be designed could be resolved in large part. In order to avoid inappropriate light signals with variable intensities, the following amendment should be discussed for the ECE-R 48 regulation.
