The elastic and inelastic behavior of two types of high strength steel alloys, BH340 and DP590, during loading and unloading under proportional biaxial stress ratios sigmax : sigmay = 1:0, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1 and 0:1 is investigated. Each as-received material was initially given an equivalent plastic strain of epsilon0 approximately 0.02 and unloaded. Subsequently the materials were aged under 170 deg C for 20 minutes in an oil bath. The effect of bake-hardening on the subsequent elastic and plastic deformation behavior of the materials was investigated. The increase in yield strength due to bake-hardening, the tangent modulus, d sigma / d epsilon, of the stress-strain curve during unloading and the amount of inelastic strain recovery are precisely measured. In case of biaxial tension the subsequent elastic moduli after prestraining and bake-hardening were lower than those measured for as-received state, while no significant difference was observed for the uniaxial case. Furthermore, it is found that bake-hardening does not affect the behavior of d sigma / d epsilon during unloading and the amount of inelastic strain recovery. The bake-hardenability index of DP590 is found to be higher for biaxial tensile stress states than for uniaxial one.
