The article presents the results of joint application of modern experimental and theoretical methods to analyze interatomic interactions on friction surfaces and in subsurface layers. The wear resistance of the wheel-rail system is shown to experience the effect of grain-boundary segregation, and the methods of suppressing its negative consequences are discussed. Adsorption on the iron surface of heteropolyphosphates of alkali metals, representing a new type of additive to lubricants, is studied. The results obtained show XES (X-ray electron spectroscopy), AES (Auger electron spectroscopy), and quantum chemistry to hold promise for the solution of tribological problems. It would be advisable, for the purposes of finding methods for increasing the wear resistance of the wheel-rail-brake block system, to use these methods for study of the exchange and diffusive processes running between the wheel and block and the segregation processes inside the wheel metal. The authors have developed technical specifications and the technology of production of polymer brake blocks that allow for affecting the strength characteristics of the wheel rolling surface suppressing negative diffusive and segregation processes in the wheel metal. New types of additives to lubricants essentially improving their properties are under development.
