There has recently been much research into ubiquitous intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) with the aim of solving traffic problems by combining information on 'people', 'roads', and 'vehicles' in real-time. Ubiquitous ITS is assumed to cover various different needs, but this study focuses on the prevention of T-bone collisions at intersections with bad visibility. One cause of T-bone collisions is a delay before other vehicles are perceived by a driver. In this case, the authors propose a method of detecting a vehicle in danger of collision before it enters an intersection and warning drivers ofthat danger, by taking each vehicle to be an agent and delivering travel information by inter-vehicle geocast (IVG) to a vehicle agent that is currently traveling on a priority road in the vicinity of the intersection. They have also confirmed the effectiveness of this method by experiments. In the experiments, they varied the traffic density on the priority road and evaluated collision probability and number of messages in comparison with a method by which travel information is broadcast continuously. The results show that the proposed method restrains the number of messages at intersections where the volume of traffic is large. The configuration of this paper is as follows: Section 2 describes the concept and characteristics of IVG, in which geocast is applied to IVC. Section 3 describes existing methods designed to avert T-bone collisions and points out problems with those methods. It also gives a summary of the proposed method. Section 4 describes simulation experiments that were performed to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method. Section 5 evaluates existing methods and the proposed method. These evaluations cover the two points of collision probability and number of messages, from the simulation experiments. Finally, section 6 gives the conclusions obtained by this study, together with challenges for the future.
