The growing needs of high performance, lightweight structural components for several aerospace applications require the development of new concepts using new materials. In almost every complex structural system struts are important elements connecting structural components. Also in flight control systems steering rods are primary elements with very high requirements. The list of specifications includes high strength and stiffness in consideration of damage tolerance aspects and fatigue behavior, high thermal stability, resistance against environmental conditions and aggressive media and very low structural weight. Classical strut design consists of a cylindrical tube in CFRP with joined metallic heads. In order to meet all requirements and to avoid the disadvantages of hybrid design MT Aerospace AG has developed and qualified a new strut design and manufacturing concept using CFRP materials. These struts are characterized by fully integrated load introduction elements in the structure made in one major manufacturing step which leads to reduced manufacturing effort and reduced mass. The developed concept permits tailor-made struts and rods adapted to geometrical requirements (e.g. length, diameter, and interface), loading (axial, lateral) and stiffness and can therefore be customized to various high performance applications.
