Damage tolerance / fracture control principles are applied to ensure that undetected cracks and other defects do not lead to failure within the service life of critical hardware of launchers, unmanned spacecraft, manned spaceflight structures and their payloads. Fracture control is implemented to help prevent catastrophic or critical consequences due to mechanical failure. ESA/ESTEC is supporting the continuous development of tools and procedures for effective implementation of fracture control. This concerns: definition of standards, flaw detection methods, analysis tools, test methods, fatigue spectra, derivation of material properties and certification of payloads. This paper provides an overview of the damage tolerance approach followed for European Space Agency (ESA) space programmes, and highlights a number of recent developments of the Fracture Control principles, procedures and tools used including: Recent developments in standardization and methodology: new ECSS-E-ST-32-01C standard, developments in nonlinear fracture mechanics methodology, developments in methodology for structural integrity of brittle materials. Development of ESACRACK software for analysis of fatigue initiation and crackgrowth; Development of FRAMES-2 database for materials test data storage and processing.
