One of the key tasks in vehicle development is to estimate fuel efficiency at an early stage of development. In the past, it was sufficient to calculate fuel consumption only for dedicated driving cycles, e.g. for the new European driving cycle 'NEDC'. Employing tools based on longitudinal dynamics usually gave sufficient accurate estimates as far as fuel consumption was concerned. With decreasing (absolute) fuel consumption and rising demand on accuracy of the estimates it became necessary to utilize more detailed models taking into account different topics such as thermal management, time resolved loads due to auxiliaries as well as heating and cooling demands. In this paper the authors give a short overview over one system model of a vehicle based on multiple physical domains. The model takes account of the most important energy fluxes, e.g. mechanical and thermal drive train, coolant circuit with heat exchangers, AC-circuit and cabin. The range of problems that can be tackled with such an approach and the key predictive capabilities will be addressed. The ability to estimate fuel consumption due to passenger comfort requirements is one of many use cases. As the authors utilize a co-simulation approach instead of one monolithic model the authors will briefly address the benefits and shortfalls of this approach.
