Within the field of mechanical engineering a key position in the near future will be taken by mechatronic. On one side, this trend will have deep affects on today's design processes and could open up a new and wide field of innovations. On the other side the automotive industry is challenged by the current CO2 discussion. The vehicle weight is one parameter to reduce energy consumption. Therefore it is needed to take action on new lightweight design ideas. Looking together on both aspects leads to the question: are mechatronic systems able to support lightweight design? This paper presents first results of a mechatronic tuned mass damper in conjunction with reducing weight (stiffness) of a body-in-white. Therefore a multidisciplinary simulation environment is needed. By using Matlab as a kernel, the authors created a new multidisciplinary full vehicle simulation. A major item is the use of component-modal-synthesis reduction method to integrate the flexible body-in-white as a state-space model and keeping computing time down. In addition to component-modal-synthesis reduction modal correction functions are implemented to allow body-in-white lightweight design changes by using only one simulation environment.
