Heavy vehicles have sluggish pneumatic brake actuators that limit the bandwidth of their antilock braking systems. This paper introduces a novel actuator featuring high bandwidth valves placed directly on the brake chamber. The actuator is experimentally characterized and modeled, and the model is combined with a validated vehicle simulation to explore the effect of pneumatic delays on emergency stops using sliding mode slip control. The combined faster valves and slip controller are predicted to reduce stopping distances by 35% over conventional ABS, and cut air usage by 80%. Moreover, the integrated valves provide better controllability and road roughness rejection than conventional ABS pneumatics.
