The present field study was designed to collect in-vehicle sound data for a variety of centreline and shoulder rumble strip applications in the US. Variables included in the field data collection included: rumble strip dimensions (length, width, depth, and spacing), vehicle speed, pavement surface type (concrete or asphalt), rumble strip type (centreline or shoulder), rumble strip pattern (rolled or milled), vehicle angle of departure, and pavement surface condition (wet or dry). A SUR model was used to model the sound level difference, frequency, and duration of sound as a function of the explanatory variables. Nearly all parameter estimates in the model had a plausible sign. The relatively poor goodness-of-fit of the model suggests that vehicle characteristics, tyre tread wear, and air temperature may influence the in-vehicle sound level, frequency, and duration of the sound generated by rumble strips. In-vehicle noise produced by rumble strips is a complex phenomenon. Vehicle and tyre characteristics are some of the key variables that were not explicitly considered in the present study. Future research should be undertaken to consider these effects. Additionally, inattentive or drowsy drivers often react to both the noise and tactile vibration generated by shoulder and centreline rumble strips. Therefore, future research should be undertaken to consider the joint effects of noise and tactile vibration levels necessary to alert inattentive or drowsy drivers.
