During the last years the limit values for PM10 (particulate matter, aerodynamic diameter less than 10 micron) have been exceeded in different German cities. Therefore, various actions have been taken by environmental authorities to reduce PM10, e.g. reduction of traffic in the cities, or restriction for heavy vehicle traffic and motorcars with high dust emissions. One of the additional countermeasures discussed in Germany presently is to remove dust from streets in a regular way by wet cleaning road sweepers. In this study, a special innovative road sweeper was investigated. This road sweeper uses high pressure water combined with vacuum cleaning to remove dust from streets and is different from systems which just swallow the roads with water. The stirring-up of dust by the road sweeper was measured using fast optical dust measurement systems (optical particle counters) in front, behind and at the side of the road sweeper and only little stirring-up of dust was found. The exhaust air of the road sweeper is cleaned within the machine and emitted via an exhaust channel. PM10 concentration in the exhaust air was measured continuously during road sweeping an found to be about 50 microgramm/m3, so dust reemissions could be regarded as moderate.
