Recent incidents have shown that a typical ship structural detail, i.e. the intersection between side longitudinals and transverse web frames, shows still fatigue failures. After problems in several tankers in the past, large container ships are now also affected. As a consequence, further fatigue tests and numerical analyses were performed with larger components, considering constant-amplitude as well as variable-amplitude loading. As the loading is primarily wave-induced, the so-called straight-line spectrum was applied, using the WASH load sequence. The fatigue behaviour of the different test models was highly affected by welding-induced residual stresses, causing differences between the models. The numerical analyses included the determination of local stresses according to the structural hot-spot and the effective notch stress approach, allowing a reasonable fatigue assessment for complex ship structural details.
