The market introduction of electric vehicles hallmarks an important step on the roadmap towards sustainable mobility. The significant changes of cost structures and technical constraints prevent electric vehicles from delivering attributes identical to current vehicles with conventional powertrains. Therefore, a successful market introduction requires unique technical concepts for specific customer groups. Similar to conventional powertrains, various customer profiles require different electrification technologies ranging from pure Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) to Range Extended Electric Vehicles (REV) with various levels of hybridization. In particular, concept variations that cut back on cost while at the same time increase the usability of electric vehicles should be considered. Range extenders emerge to be a considerable option to support the acceptance of electric vehicles. New propulsion technologies such as battery electric powertrains lead to new cost structures that may promote new business models. Depending on pay back time of cost premiums, rental models are likely to positively impact on customer acceptance. Besides traditional models like customer ownership, leasing or renting, new models might be considered, for instance purchasing the vehicle without battery pack and leasing the battery. Another approach called the 'Mobile-phone-approach' preserves the customer from initial investment by charging a regular base fee plus a usage fee, e.g. dependant on the distance driven. Ford will analyze the market for electric vehicle in the framework of a fleet test. The results of this test will contribute to decisions regarding future electric vehicle products.
