A Catalytic honeycomb substrate (called NCH structure) mainly comprised of Fe/beta- zeolite and a conventional wash coated type catalyst (called conventional structure) using same Fe/beta-zeolite were prepared, respectively. The amount of Fe/beta-zeolite per unit volume in NCH is around double compared with conventional structure. It was found that NCH structure has possibility to increase controllability of NH3 slip due to its higher NH3 adsorptive capability and that NO(x) conversion performance of the NCH structure is always superior to the conventional structure at a given NH3 adsorption ratio. Especially at low temperatures, NCH structure exhibits approximately 1.6 times higher NO(x) conversion performance than conventional structure even when setting by 40 % of NH3 slip margin. Storing NH3 to NCH as much as and as quickly as possible without NH3 slip and maintaining the adsorbed state by a stoichiometric injection of urea provide ideal conditions for NCH to have high NO(x) conversion performance under a real driving condition. In NEDC evaluation, the average NO(x) conversion efficiency increases with increasing initial NH3 adsorption amount both NCH and conventional structure. NCH which can store higher amount of NH3 exhibits higher NO(x) conversion performance than conventional structure.
