This paper describes the deceleration required to avoid collision using a deceleration for collision avoidance (DCA) index, which can be applied to determining the warning provision threshold of a forward obstacle collision warning system (FOCWS). This is equivalent to the collision warning function mentioned above. Moreover, in a situation where the collision risk with the preceding vehicle becomes high, the DCA values are compared with those from other indices, such as time-to collision (TTC) and margin-to-collision (MTC), which are used in conventional FOCWSs. Cases in which the vehicle in front maintains its current acceleration or decelerates abruptly are defined as overt- and potential DCAs, respectively. Numerical simulations are performed to compare the DCA values with time-to-collision and margin-to-collision, which are wellknown indices used to evaluate the potential collision risk in a situation where the possibility of collision with a forward obstacle is high.
