For the front sections of the External Pods of the research aircraft HALO, bird strike protections concepts had to be developed, realized and validated, based on the 'Certification Specification for Large Aeroplanes' (CS-25) and the specific section CS 25,631 that is required for bird strike damage. The concept development and bird strike test preparation was consequently supported by numerical High Velocity Impact (HVI) simulations. An experimental programme was performed where several ideas for a bird strike protection system were evaluated with simple flat demonstrator plates and using a rigid steel ball impactor. The best outcome of this test series was used to design for the Belly Pod nose section a 'catching membrane' energy absorbing system by combining a GFRP laminate with epoxy matrix with a highly deformable inner shell made out of a self reinforced PP fabric material. For the Wing Pod nose section, the pylon leading edge and the Ventral Fin leading edge, a 'splitter' principle was selected which cuts the bird into pieces and deflects the energy away from the structure. All bird strike test comprising the Wing Pod nose section, the pylon leading edge and the Belly Pod nose section were performed in the DLR gas gun facility using an artificial bird with 4 lb mass and 315 kt initial velocity. All those tests are correlated to HVI simulations with the explicit code PAM-CRASH which were performed before and again after the tests using the actual test parameters.
