A good knowledge of customer driving behavior is necessary for minimization of costs in total vehicle development. A definition of customer-oriented driving states reasonable in this context was provided, which focuses on the concept of the customer distribution of driving parameters. The recording of customer data with little storage space on the control unit as binned data enables the universal availability of customer-oriented driving states which are characterized by the customer distribution. On the basis of an estimation of the customer distribution, a substantially shortened time reference following the customer distribution can be derived from the binned data stored on the control unit. For this purpose, adequate drawing in accordance with the customer distribution has to be performed, where the Chi 2-statistic indicates the performance. Possible drawing methods for driving parameters which are physically correlated were illustrated on the basis of the NEDC and the categorical Chi 2-statistic. The application of the introsociated duced concepts14 in the context of the customer-oriented longitudinal dynamics allows the derivation of customer-oriented driving cycles. For the total vehicle development other applications of the concepts introduced are possible: Examples for interesting joint distributions of two driving parameters are 'shutdown durations' and 'subsequent mileage traveled' which can be used for the evaluation of heat management measures as well as load spectra (i.e. 'engine speed' and 'torque') which can be used for the determination of customer-oriented engine load (engine test cycles). Instead of the time-independent binning, a binning that becomes smaller when approaching regions of increased relative frequencies is conceivable. Such an adaptive binning includes information on the distribution in an a priori manner so that enhanced accuracy is to be expected from resulting distribution estimates. It has to be taken into account that an upper limit of the number of bins exists due to the storage space limitation of the control unit. As a consequence, the storage space would no longer be independent of the period of time traveled, but always smaller than the storage space limit given by the control unit. Although the methods introduced for the estimation of the distribution are extensive and adequate, improvements are possible, which, however, have to be investigated concerning their efficiency. In order to, e.g., consider local correlations, the application of different bandwidth matrices for different parameter regions can be mentioned as a possibility to improve the bandwidth determination. When a global bandwidth matrix for all parameter regions is used, the generalized version of Scott's rule should be replaced by other plug-in methods or by crossvalidation, if it has to be assumed that the distribution to be estimated deviates too much from a normal distribution. To which extent, when performing the distribution estimation, the identification of the mid-points of the bins with the data points could be improved by a shift towards the region with the maximum relative frequency, remains to be investigated.
