An analysis of 1 MW permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machines for a 4 MW locomotive application is presented. The motors are of direct drive type with high power density and liquid jacket cooling. Different stators with distributed and concentrated windings and also different interior PM type rotors are numerically evaluated, and their performances are compared. The 2D finite element method (FEM) is used for magnetic, thermal and mechanical stress analysis.
